Paris (France):  France's president Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday named country's education minister Gabriel Attal with which the the 34-year-old became France's youngest and first openly gay head of government, news agency AFP reported.

At 34, Attal is the youngest PM in modern French history, outranking even Socialist Laurent Fabius who was 37 when he was appointed by François Mitterrand in 1984, BBC reported.

Macron’s office announced the appointment in a statement. Attal, 34, rose to prominence as the government spokesman and education minister. According to a report by Associated Press, he is France’s first openly gay prime minister.

Macron – who was France’s youngest-ever president when he came to power in 2017 -- is to work with Attal to name a new government in the coming days, though some key ministers are expected to continue in their posts.

Notably, European Parliament elections are scheduled to take place in June, with eurosceptics expected to make record gains at a time of widespread public discontent over surging living costs and the failure of European governments to curb migration flows.
