2 polling stations of Barasat, Mathurapur of West Bengal to re-poll on ECI orders, heavy security deployed

KOLKATA: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has ordered repolling at one polling station each in the Barasat and Mathurapur Lok Sabha constituencies in West Bengal.

The ECI took this decision due to irregularities during the initial voting on June 1, on the basis of reports by the District Election Officer/observers from the stations.

The repolling is scheduled just a day before the counting of votes for the Lok Sabha elections 2024.

Heavy security deployed around the polling booths to ensure a smooth and secure voting process.

The decision comes a day after a BJP worker was beheaded in West Bengal, allegedly by TMC supporters/goons for influencing minorities in the region to vote for the BJP.

Reports of mis-casting of votes, as well as non-registration of votes in EVMs have also emerged from West Bengal, arousing concerns and questions with respect to the conduct of free and fair elections in the state.

Reports suggest that free and fair elections have been hampered in West Bengal due to threats of violence.
