SC to hear Punjab Governor's refusal to convene Budget session

NEW DELHI: Punjab government has filed a plea in the Supreme Court questioning the Governor's alleged indecision to convene Budget session of the Assembly on March 3.

The plea claimed it was a settled law that the Governor has to summon Assembly as per advise of Cabinet but it was sought to be overridden by sitting over the Cabinet's advise.

Appearing for the AAP government, senior advocate A M Singhvi mentioned the matter for urgent hearing before a bench of Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud and Justice P S Narasimha.

The court fixed the matter for consideration at 3.50 pm on Tuesday.

Punjab Governor Banwarilal Purohit is reported to have refused permission to the government to summon the Budget session till he had taken legal advice on the tweets and letter written by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

In his submission, Singhvi said the Governor said since the CM made some "derogatory" statements in unconnected matters, he would not convene session.

The court asked him as to when the session is proposed to be held.

As Singhvi said it is scheduled from March 3, the court decided to consider the matter on Tuesday.
