SC to hear on Friday plea for extension of protection to 'Shivlingam'

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Thursday agreed to constitute a special bench to take up at 3 pm on Friday a plea related to extension of protection to 'Shivlingam' discovered at Gyanvapi mosque complex, Varanasi.

Advocate Vishanu Shankar Jain mentioned the case before a bench presided over by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud on behalf of a group of Hindu women for urgent hearing, since the protection, earlier ordered for 'Shivlingam' for eight weeks, is expiring on November 12.

"We will constitute the bench," the CJI said.

Jain cited the top court's order of May 17 which had directed for protecting the area at Gyanvyapi mosque complex where a 'Shivlingam' was found as per Hindu side but ordered that no Muslim should be restrained or impeded from offering 'Namaz' over there.

The court had then also directed for making alternative arrangements for doing 'vaju' by the namazis at the site.

This arrangement was directed for eight weeks which is expiring on November 12, Jain said.

He also submitted the court had then directed the district judge, Varanasi to decide maintaining of suit for worship, which was finally adjudicated as maintainable and appeal against this order was pending before the Allahabad High Court.
