SC to form special benches to hear criminal appeals, tax, land acquisition matters [Read Circular]

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court is going to constitute specialised benches from next week to take up criminal appeals, tax, land acquisition and motor accidents claims tribunal cases.

A bench led by Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud made an announcement in this regard during the mentioning hour.

He also indicated Justice Surya Kant led bench would hear cases related to land acquisitions.

On Tuesday, the CJI had for the first time said from the next week, the Supreme Court will have a special bench to exclusively deal with tax cases.

“There will be a special bench from next week onwards, on Wednesdays and Fridays, to deal with direct and indirect sales tax matters solely,” he told a group of lawyers.

The then CJI H L Dattu had in the early months of 2015 constituted a bench that would only hear tax cases, recognising the need to reduce the pile of pending cases in the Supreme Court.

On November 18, Chief Justice Chandrachud had said the Supreme Court, in its full court meeting, has decided that all the 13 benches will hear 10 transfer petitions pertaining to matrimonial disputes and equal number of bail petitions daily.

Justice Chandrachud took over as the 50 th Chief Justice of India on November 9.

A circular issued on November 22 stated that 10 Transfer Petitions (After Notice) followed by 10 Bail Matters will be listed at the top of the Board before the Courts on all five days.

It also said generally around seven Fresh Matters will also be listed on Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday.

The regular hearing matters will be listed on Wednesday and Thursday.

It clarified that no Regular hearing matters will be listed on Tuesday.
