Farmers Protest SCBA writes to CJI to take suo moto action

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) writes to CJI DY Chandrachud to take suo moto action against "erring farmers" for forcibly trying to enter Delhi in a bid to create nuisance and disturb the daily life of citizens.

In the letter, President of the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) Adish Aggarwala appealed to CJI Chandrachud to instruct the courts not to issue any unfavourable rulings due to the absence of lawyers in court proceedings.

“I further request Your Lordship to take suo motu action against the erring farmers for forcibly trying to enter Delhi in a bid to create nuisance and disturb the daily life of citizens,” reads the letter.

“It is suspected that this protest is politically motivated ahead of the forthcoming Parliament election,” Aggarwala's letter added.

Even if the farmers' demands are valid, they should not inconvenience the general public. This is an appropriate moment for the Honorable Supreme Court to take action on its own initiative and ensure that these farmers do not disrupt public peace or cause significant inconvenience, the letter stated.

'Delhi Chalo' march: What do the farmers want?

The protesting farmers began their 'Delhi Chalo' march on February 13 to push the Centre to address their demands. Foremost among these demands is the enactment of a law guaranteeing a minimum support price (MSP) for crops.

Notably, two years ago they forced the Modi government to take back three farm laws after a year-long protest at Delhi’s borders.
