On August 23, 2018, Lt. Governor of Delhi Anil Baijal held a meeting on law & order and reviewed the actions taken and strategy adopted to prevent property related offences especially the increasing number of motor vehicle thefts. The meeting was attended by Addl. Chief Secretary (Home), GNCTD; Commissioner of Police, Delhi; Special CPs, Joint CPs of Delhi Police and Special Commissioner (Transport).
Delhi Police made a detailed presentation in which they informed the Hon’ble Lt. Governor about the present status and the current trend in this regard.
Further, in the meeting the Delhi Police apprised Hon’ble Lt. Governor that the major contributing factors of motor vehicle theft is the acute shortage of parking space, the general practice of parking vehicle on the roadside and unwillingness of the majority of motor vehicle owners to install Anti Auto Theft Equipment.
Certain strategies to minimize the cases of various property offences especially the ‘Motor Vehicle Theft’ in close coordination with agencies of other states and departments were deliberated.
At the outset, LG Baijal directed Delhi Police to focus on multi-pronged strategies including coordination with other stakeholders like transport department, insurance companies and police force of neighbouring states involving systemic changes to break the vicious cycle of demand and supply of all such stolen motor vehicles.
LG Baijal strongly desired to increase the focus on investigation, prosecution and conviction so as to create deterrence in the minds of criminals. He also instructed to explore the provision of making installation of various safety devices such as Anti Vehicle Theft Equipment, a mandatory condition for the registration of vehicles in Delhi.
Concerned over citizen’s safety and security, LG directed Delhi Police to create mass awareness campaigns among citizens for adopting preventive measures. Latest technological breakthroughs in this field should be popularized so that citizens can exercise informed choices to stay safe everywhere.
