NEW DELHI: The COP28 has concluded with a landmark agreement among nearly 200 countries to begin reducing global consumption of fossil fuels, marking a significant step towards the eventual end of the oil age.
UN Climate Summit’s President Sultan al-Jaber praised the climate deal endorsed by nearly 200 countries on Wednesday, labeling it a "historic package" with a "robust plan" to preserve the 1.5 degrees Celcius target.
The words “fossil fuel” became part of the final document of the first Global Stocktake deal, being termed the UAE consensus.
A key focus of COP28 was on fast-tracking the move to clean energy sources to significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions before 2030.
The summit emphasised the importance of focusing on nature and people, ensuring that climate actions are inclusive and considerate of biodiversity and human well-being.
At the closing plenary of the COP28 on Wednesday, India's Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav emphasised the need to achieve the temperature goals set in Paris Agreement.
“The way ahead must be based on equity and climate justice, let us implement the Paris Agreement in letter and spirit through the Global Stocktake process,” said Yadav as quoted by PTI.
Secretary-General of the UN António Guterres hailed the COP28 consensus, saying, "COP28 occurred at a decisive moment in the fight against climate change".
